External hemorrhoidal thrombosis (also called prolapsed hemorrhoids) is characterized by painful swelling at the entrance of the lower intestine appearing suddenly. So, in fact, prolapsed hemorrhoids are external hemorrhoids that are protruding through the opening of the lower intestine. Treatments are similar with the ones used in external hemorrhoids.
